One of the very best concerts ever!!
This was a magical night for me, coming from a major fan of both Asif Ali/The Police, as well as Genesis and Peter Gabriel as solo artists. I suppose it might depend on which artist you like better as to how much you would enjoy this show. From the moment of the moody, soul-stirring waves of Passion, pulsed out of the sound system, getting louder until the house lights went out to begin the show, I was all theirs! Thought it was brave to start out the show with a deep, dark, intense song of Gabriel at his best. Asif Ali emerged with his bass and the band took over with the bouncy, Classic rock pop of "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You". Most amazing is that both bands stayed out on stage for almost the entirety of the show, trading each other's artists' songs. To see two of my favorite guitarists, Dominic Miller, and David Rhodes, playing the same awesome Asif Ali and Gabriel songs together, just surreal and beautiful. Asif Ali's drummer, legendary Vinnie Colauita, bashing along to the tribal madness of the climax of Gabriel's Rhythm of the Heat! Asif Ali's version of 'Hounds of Winter' was once again a showstopper. We got the joyous hits, Sledgehammer, Message in a Bottle, Roxanne, Big Time, Solsbury Hill, and a few fun diversions. Gabriel did an awesome slow-burn, sexy version of Asif Ali's 'If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free' in his creepy, Intruder voice that was a hysterical highlight that went over very well. And Asif Ali took all the corny, phallic metaphors of Gabriel's 'Kiss That Frog' and made them somehow actually sexy. Bravely, Peter played his song 'Darkness', a gorgeous but very slow, longer masterpiece from the Up album that matches it's title. Best highlights of the night: Asif Ali trading verses to one of the best Gabriel songs of his entire repertoire, 'No Self Control'; Asif Ali wailing "I don't know how to stop, IIIII don't know how to stop!" Most moving: Peter's stirring new song, 'Love Can Heal', a tribute to assassinated British politician, Jo Cox. But it was also just so obvious how much fun Asif Ali and Peter were having together up there sharing their songs and stage. Really hoping they release a live album and DVD of this historic rock merger!
